Aqueduct!

Segovia is an ancient city, lying about 60 miles Northeast of Madrid. A great place to wander around and take in a fantastic 10th-century castle (the Alcazar of Segovia) and a grand 15th century Gothic cathedral.

But also fascinating is the Aqueduct of Segovia, a defining feature of the city, that shows up on Segovia’s coat of arms.

It is perhaps the most important Roman civil engineering work in the Iberian peninsula—in fact, one of the best-preserved monuments in Spain.… Read more →

Land!

Wrote Ogden Nash (1902–1971), the American poet, thus,
In a poem that he titled “Columbus”:

Once upon a time there was an Italian,
And some people thought he was a rapscallion,
But he wasn’t offended,
Because other people thought he was splendid,
And he said the world was round,
And everybody made an uncomplimentary sound.

So Columbus said, Somebody show me the sunset and somebody did and he set sail for it,
And… Read more →

Genesis is coming ….

We read the Bible to bring divine guidelines for life from Scripture to bear on our lives so that we, the people of God, may be aligned to the will of God, for the glory of God.

But how does this work when you take a “bite-sized” chunk of text—a “pericope”—as you might do in your devotional study, or your pastor might do in the Sunday sermon? What in this slice of Scripture is to be carried over into the life of the Christian?

I have made the claim elsewhere… Read more →

Book!

OK, another Madrid tip. If you are booklover. Or if you just like the smell of old books.

Or … even if you just like the best churros and chocolate in the world!

Now that needs explanation.

Chocolatería San Ginés, open 24 hours, every day, has been operating in a house since 1894. You can go there for coffee and cakes, but what you really want is churros and hot chocolate. The churros are doughnut-like fried things, with crispy, ridged surfaces and a soft core, ready… Read more →

Depraved!

The Valle de los Caídos (“Valley of the Fallen”) is located in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, about 40 miles northwest of Madrid, and covers about 3,500 acres. It comprises a Catholic basilica and a burial place for the 40,000 who died during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). The most striking part of the whole construction is the 500-foot high cross on a granite outcrop over the basilica; the cross is visible for miles around, the tallest… Read more →

Hershael York: And this is How I Preach …

[I’m happy to present Hershael on How I Preach. A fellow-member of the Evangelical Homiletics Society, he holds up the fort of preaching at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. As you will see, he’s one cool guy. I’ve enjoyed being around him, most recently teaching a PhD class at Southern last month. Enjoy his wisdom!]

Sweets!

It’s a clandestine operation. Located in Madrid. In a convent! Yup, the Monasterio del Corpus Christi. A secret undertaking. Sweets! They make and sell dulces (pronounced with the cute Castilian lisp, of course: “dool-thays”).

You can find this cloak-and-dagger operation on the Plaza del Conde de Miranda, 3, in Old Madrid.

The convent building is a 17th century structure and the nuns have been there since 1605 (not the same individuals).

Well, they need support to keep… Read more →
