Alive?

Alive?

Samantha Dressig has a major problem. She’s dead. At least that’s what the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)says.

At the bright age of 25, Ms. Dressig, a summer camp counselor, is full of energy and she has the right perspective on things.

Life is short. You never know when it’s gonna end.”

True, but when it is the IRS that says when and not your doctor or undertaker, that can be problematic.

The unfortunate mix-up began with her mother’s death, and seven years later the situation has not been resolved, causing a tax nightmare for the woman and her father. Because the IRS declared her dead seven years ago.

Dressig:

The last actual person I had spoken to from the IRS said—and I quote, ‘Wow, you’re dead all over our system.’”

Her mother had passed away of ovarian cancer in 2014. That year, when Ms. Dressig tried to file her taxes, was when the morbid mix-up began. She believes the government has them confused, even though they don’t share the same first or last name.

They say nope, sorry, this account’s linked to a deceased person.”

And now that’s also creating trouble for Ms. Dressig’s father’s tax returns, with the IRS saying he’s trying to claim a deceased dependent.

During her only face-to-face meeting at an IRS taxpayer assistance center she was promised it would be fixed.

But that was before COVID. She has been ghosted ever since. So some good folks at the local CBS new station decided to look into the matter. One of them spoke to an IRS agent:

“She’s definitely not dead. I just spoke with her.”

Ms. Dressig’s first response from the IRS stated:

These situations may take some time to resolve.”

But that was seven years ago.

Dressig:

I honestly want the IRS to know that I’m alive, kicking.”

Yes, indeed!

But, there’s a more important aspect to being declared alive. The aspect of one’s eternal life.

Because of the sinfulness of all humans, we, without exception, are dead in the sight of God, eternally separated from him.

And while you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world,
according to the ruler of the authority of the air,
[the ruler] of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience,
among whom we all also formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh ….
Ephesians 2:1–3

But the love and mercy of God was so great that he made us alive.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
John 3:16

And not only that, he assured us of future glory …

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, …
co-enlivened [us] with Christ … and co-raised and co-seated [us] in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:4–6

Available to all who believe in Jesus Christ as their only God and Savior, who bore our sins and died and rose again, paying the price of our failings.

He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross,
so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.
1 Peter 2:24

Amazing! What a great salvation! And all of it free, a gift of eternal life, to all.

For by grace you have been saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.
Ephesians 2:8

Life abundant, for now and for eternity. Dead no more!
