Weight!

Herbalife Nutrition commissioned OnePoll to conduct a study recently.

Herbalife Nutrition Ltd. is a global multi-level marketing corporation selling dietary supplements. Accused a few years ago of operating a “sophisticated pyramid scheme,” Herbalife agreed to “fundamentally restructure” its business (but only in the US) and pay a $200 million fine to the US Federal Trade Commission as a result of complaints received by them. In any case …

This was the fourth such annual “Writing Off the End of the Year” survey exploring the eating habits of 2,000 Americans. The finding: the average American expects to gain another 8 lbs through the holiday season. (Last year, it was only a 7-lb. gain, and in 2019, 6 lbs.)

What with all the pies, cookies, office parties, chocolate gifts, and such (including, in my case, some Indian hypercaloric and sweet delicacies like ladoos and rasmalai leftover from last week—not to mention baked goodies donated to this single guy by his sister-in-law—all being consumed with earnest salivation and lick-lipping enthusiasm by your faithful blogger), this is not an unexpected finding.

This overindulgence goes straight to the waistline. 8 lbs.! Besides, the average respondent has apparently gained a pound more than the “quarantine 15” since March of 2020.

Yet, 90% of those surveyed plan to enjoy the holiday season with gastronomic abandon. Perhaps it is the pandemic stress leading 61% to feel they deserve more treats this year. Whatever the rationalization, the truth is that 48% of Americans admit to having eaten so much during holidays past that their pants or their belts had to be undone by a button or extended by a hole, respectively. Thirty-nine percent have gone to wearing stretchy clothing during this season. In fact, 45% have had either multiple lunches or multiple dinners, at different places.

Declared Dr. Kent Bradley, chief health and nutrition officer at Herbalife:

Holiday meals and festive celebrations don’t have to destroy your healthy lifestyle. By focusing on eating proteins over carbs, slowing down your eating pace and making sure you don’t go to the party hungry, you can enjoy the party and minimize the weight gain.”

OK.

But no one’s listening. Sixty-four percent of respondents are deliberately putting off their attempts to be healthy until after the holidays (compared to 56% last year). The odd thing is that only 39% plan to make this return to healthy eating a 2022 New Year’s resolution; only 27% anticipate exercising more.

Bradley again:

The best and most successful New Year’s health resolutions combine nutritious, balanced diets and exercise, have specific and achievable goals, and activate a community of like-minded supportive people.”

Have another slice of pie, y’all.

But watch out …

Have you found honey? Eat only what you need,
That you not have it in excess and vomit it.
Proverbs 25:16

And a few verses later, Scripture compares overeating to prideful conceit.

It is not good to eat much honey,
Nor is it glory to search out one’s own glory.
Proverbs 25:27

Vomiting is bad enough, but there is also this:

For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty.
Proverbs 23:21

So, remember:

No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man;
and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able,
but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also,
so that you will be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13

After all …

The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite,
But the stomach of the wicked is in need.
Proverbs 13:25

The verse that change my whole life perspective about food is Job 23:12–“I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.” If anybody on earth deserved chocolate comfort food, it was Job! I pray often that God will make this verse true in my life. May the word of God bring more delight to me than the sweetest Christmas dainties. Even necessary food cannot supercede our appetite for the words of His mouth!
