Painful!

Painful!

Recently, OnePoll conducted a survey of 2,000 Americans, on behalf of Axogen, a company that is …

“… focused specifically on the science, development and commercialization of technologies for peripheral nerve regeneration and repair.”

They asked respondents about their daily experience and the impact on their life of dealing with chronic aches and pains.

They found that 37 percent had received a diagnosis for chronic pain at some point, defined as ongoing pain that usually lasts longer than six months. Of those who had not received an official diagnosis (about 1,200 respondents), 18 percent suspect they actually do have chronic pain.

Strikingly, nearly half of those surveyed (48 percent) believe they’ll never have a pain-free day ever again. And the average American thinks that he or she will have only 13 truly pain-free days each year.

Just existing, it appears, is painful!

Indeed, it ages the sufferer: the average respondent felt older than they actually were by 6 years due to these aches and pains. Five or more times throughout the day, the average American felt discomfort when sitting down or standing up.

Having an ongoing affliction with a frozen shoulder, I can fully empathize (and agree)!

And, not being a woman, I am apparently at a disadvantage when it comes to pain, because—whether it is true or not—65 percent of the survey responders asserted that women have a higher pain tolerance than men.

In any case, what is one to do?

Forty-four percent of those surveyed wished their doctor would provide them with more information regarding their aches and pains. Forty-five percent wished their physician could do more for them than simply write them a prescription for medication.

Axogen, of course, has an ax to grind (sorry, couldn’t resist). Said its Chairperson, CEO, and President, Karen Zaderej:

Living with chronic pain is incredibly difficult and can truly take over a person’s life. … Many people don’t realize that their pain may be caused by a damaged or injured peripheral nerve. If a nerve is to blame, it’s possible to resolve the pain by repairing the nerve damage through pioneering surgical nerve repair techniques and provide patients with a much more permanent solution.”

With all of this uncertainty and unclarity, 43 percent plan to do their own research on how to better manage and treat their pain, but they don’t know where to start.

The fact of the matter is, we are all broken people living in a broken world.

The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,
and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ,
if indeed we co-suffer so that we may also be co-glorified.
Romans 8:16–17

Until that day, suffering is part and parcel of our lives. Indeed, the entirety of creation suffers, along with us humans.

For we know that the whole creation co-groans and co-hurts until now.
And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit,
even we ourselves groan within ourselves,
waiting eagerly for our adoption as children, the redemption of our body.
Romans 8:22–23

Yes! Redemption of the body! I like that!

And on that day …

… creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption
into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
Romans 8:21

So, till then, let’s rest assured—as much as is possible in a life of pain—that …

… the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared
with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
Romans 8:18
